Ian Hoar — Passion for Technology – Geeking Out

Electronic paper, and e-book Readers are all based on a pretty cool technology that is truly something you have to see to believe. E Ink is the brand name manufactured by E Ink Corporation and it really does look like paper. The first time you see it you realize that it has a completely different feel to it than your standard LCD display. You can check out an E Ink display at the Sony store or anywhere that sells E Ink based readers.

Lately E Ink has been getting a lot of press. Earlier this month Esquire showed off the worlds first ever E Ink magazine cover. This brought visions of the science fiction film Minority Report to many people and an environmental disaster in the making for others. There are also many e-readers being released with iRex to introduce a 10.2-inch E Ink reader next week. Although I love the technology, I think the current vision of E Ink by the press and blog sphere is somewhat flawed.

iPhone 3G power adapterIf you bought an iPhone 3G in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico or Several Latin American countries you may need to ship it back to Apple and get a replacement.

From Apple:

Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock.  We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.

AndroidEveryone is wondering what HTC and Blackberry will have up their sleeves over the next few months. The Android powered HTC Dream will be unveiled at a press event in New York City by T-Mobile next week on September 23 and it is rumoured to be ready for release sometime in October. There is also a pretty interesting video of Android being shown off at the Developer Day in London, and it’s looking very polished.

FacebookLets face it, most of us hate change, even if it is for the better or in the form of progress. You hear it all the time with technology, “Oh who really needs that”, or “The Internet is a fad”. Sometimes it’s something smaller like oh… I don’t know… “I hate the new Facebook design!“.

Give me full RSS feeds!

September 14th, 2008

RSS feed iconI’m an RSS feed junky. I currently have about 15 feeds in my Google reader which results in over a 100 stories a day during the week. Most of these I quickly scan for interesting news or flag them for reading at a later date. A lot of sites I read give me full feeds, which is greatly appreciated and results in more of their content being read. Others only leave a snippet of the full article and try to entice you to click to the full website.

Microsoft’s second ad with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld is out today. The first one didn’t do much for me, but this one is a lot better and after seeing it the first one also makes more sense as it kind of sets the stage for future installments. I’m now really curious to see where Bill and Jerry’s journey will lead them next. By the time this series is over I have a feeling we will be more attached to these two witty characters.

SporeIt’s nice to see the list of big name games growing for the iPhone/iTouch, not that the independent games aren’t sometimes just as good. Game industry leaders like John Carmack have already said that the device is a very powerful hand held device for gaming.

Today I caved and bought Spore for my iPhone. I almost didn’t want to, given the outrage over the PC version of Spore and it’s draconian DRM protection, it’s just unacceptable and that’s no way to treat your paying customers. Again the legitimate users lose and the pirates get a DRM free version. Anyway, back to Spore for the iPhone.

Apple LogoThe blog sphere has been buzzing with Apple Rumours lately, a lot of it generated just over two weeks ago when Kevin Rose dropped a bunch of Apple Rumours on his blog. The official announcements are due this Tuesday at Apple’s “Let’s Rock” media event and are rumoured to be big. Everything from an updated iPod line to new iPhone firmware with unreleased features. iTunes 8 is also rumoured to be a major update with a new visualizer to boot. My fingers are crossed that there will be some easy way to finally transfer “Your” music to multiple computers and maybe even keep them synced, but I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Sad tab in Google Chrome

September 5th, 2008

I just got my first sad tab in Google Chrome. Surprisingly it was in Gmail and it cascaded to Google reader. All other tabs were fine. You can reload the sad tab which is pretty cool if you haven’t just lost a long email. Still it’s better than losing all your tabs and you are always just a reload away from getting back what you were looking at.

Aw, Snap! is the message. This is just so Google. No cryptic error message, just the reality of the situation.

AdobeAdobe Creative Suite 4 is set for a September 23 release date (Update: the 23rd was the announcement date, release date should be mid October). Adobe has a registration form up for a September 23 web broadcast of CS4. I always look forward to the Adobe products, especially Photoshop. This is a program I have grown to really know and I’ve used it since version 3. Even though I love this program, their are some little issues that bother me, so I thought with the release coming up I would create my personal wish list for CS4.
