I was dealing with this a few weeks ago and it took me awhile to figure out. I had a proper doctype and viewing the source code showed that everything was okay. I was trouble shooting the php html and css, but to no avail. I’d dealt with this issue once in the past, I was sure of it. Finally it hit me when looking through the drop-downs of Notepad++. It turned out to be the character encoding, or the BOM in the character coding to be precise.

Several sources this week have reported on Windows 7 and its multi-touch features. Windows 7 will be the successor to Vista and no one is sure when it will come out; Microsoft dates can be slippery. That said I am a huge geek when it comes to new technology. Multi-touch is already a reality, but several years ago it belonged to the realm of Science Fiction and there is no denying that it is very cool. Playing with the Apple iTouch/iPhone for the first time is awesome as long as it’s not in the Apple store. Those things can get pretty nasty looking with Ebola boogers smeared all over them.

Continuing on the browser theme, the spread Firefox website has a really cool viral campaign going on right now. Firefox is of course the awesome browser that is now rivaling Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. The site looks great and the idea behind Download Day 2008 is for people to make a pledge to download Firefox 3 the day it comes out and help set the Guinness World Record for Most Software Downloaded in a 24 hour period.
All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.
The really neat thing about the site is the map of the world. You can roll over any country and see how many pledges they have so far; come on Canada! At the time of this writing the United States has the most pledges, but what I find really interesting is the next closest countries which are Brazil, Poland, Japan and Germany. It will be really interesting to see who comes out with the most downloads on release day. Right now the total stands at 231,189, lets get this number growing! Go and make your pledge now, lets get more standards compliant web browsers out there, and besides, Firefox is just a great browser anyway. If you really want to get involved, you can also check out the Get Involved section where you can find idea’s on how to spread the word to other people.
For my thoughts on current web browsers see Choosing the wrong web browser.
The first browser wars ended years ago and now it seems they are back for a second round. I don’t think they will ever match the Netscape vs. Internet Explorer days, and today there are many more platforms to consider. Before reading this post further, I should mention that I am a web designer / developer and I have an axe to grind with Microsoft, especially when it comes to their browser. I will actually be completely blunt and say that this browser is downright horrible and the only reason it has any market share at all is because it is included with practically every mainstream computer sold on the planet. The very fact that Firefox has gained so much ground over the past three years against such incredible odds is testament not only to how great Firefox is, but also to how horrible Internet Explorer is.

It’s finally up, and I am pretty happy with it so far. My new blog design has been in the works for well over a month now.
If you forgot what the old one looked like or had never even seen it, here is a shot of it. The old designed served it’s purpose, but now I want to make my site more accessible, and I’ve started with the Featured Topics on the side. Eventually I would like to get some free stuff on here, and possibly even a Wordpress plugin I have been toying about for awhile. I will also release the old template for anyone who wants it in the near future, I just have to round up the PSD files and clean it up a bit.
I also must say that Internet Explorer never ceases to amaze me with how incredibly bad it is. I spend at least one full day battling IE7 bugs. As it stands I still have random disappearing backgrounds every now and then, so there is still a bit of tweaking to be done. While I was working on the redesign I found this incredibly huge list of IE bugs. One of the bugs even makes IE7 crash! So far there are 134 bugs listed here. Some of the blog quotes are fantastic, they are interspersed throughout the list.
Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys the redesign.
Gizmodo has confirmed the date of the new 3G iPhone and says it will be announced at the Apple WWDC Keynote on June 9th. Mac Rumors also reports “AT&T to Complete 3G Rollout by June” which coincides with the launch of the iPhone. Mac Rumors also has news that Spain has an iPhone launch date of June 18th.
Rogers, the long Rumoured Canadian iPhone provider officially announced the iPhone last month for release later this year. With all this news one can only hope that Canada will finally have an iPhone and soon! Could we possibly see an iPhone in Canada by June?
After over a year of non-stop problems with vista I have returned to Windows XP on my home computer and plan to do so at work within the next week. I know we all complain about Microsoft, but in the case of Windows Vista it’s exceeding well earned.

A friend of mine ran into a serious problem where they could no longer progress in the missions of Grand Theft Auto 4. When they went to the yellow way point arrows nothing happened and the mission would not trigger. It seems to happen after “The Puerto Rican Connection” mission when you receive a call from an unknown person. I did a few searches on the web and found several other people having the same problem. Many had to start the game over, but the good news is there is a fix.
In order to trigger the missions again you need to call one of your contacts. It’s probably best to call Roman and book something with him. This should trigger the stories progress. I’ve also read that a manual save can work too, but I know for sure a call too Roman will work. I have not actually experienced the bug myself, but this work for my friend. The bug also seems to effect both PS3 and 360 versions of the game. GTA 4 is still a fantastic game, and hopefully not too many people experience this bug and if they do I hope this helps and hopefully Rockstar will have a fix for it soon.
Lots of smartphone news lately and it’s all making my decision on a new phone that much more difficult. The new BlackBerry Bold was announced today.
The BlackBerry Bold smartphone (model number: 9000) is scheduled to be available from wireless carriers around the world beginning this summer.
Like most of the new smart phones coming out, this one looks pretty slick too. Check out the official site for more details.
I’m still waiting for a good Canadian Data plan. Then we Canadians can actually start to use these phones.
A co-worker asked me this a few weeks ago. It’s not something you often need in Photoshop, and the way it is done has changed over time. These directions apply to Photoshop CS 3, but they may work in other versions as well.
